Stephanie Seidel: Looking back at some of your writings, I was struck in particular by two phrases you mention: You talk about your work as “sculpt-ing life within a space,” as well as your pieces acting as "generative spaces.” Both quotes touch upon the complex relationship of presence and absence, materialization and dematerialization within your work.

For Film (Whitney Museum of American Art), Margaret Honda installed pre-set selections of sixteen color-balancing and six neutral-density cinematography lighting gels in the Museum’s west-facing stairwell windows. The gels, which are used to control lighting conditions on a film set, are arranged here according to the manufacturer’s numerical order, creating a sequence from top to bottom along the Museum’s architecture. Over the course of each day and throughout the exhibition’s duration, the colors and their effects change with the light and weather. After sunset they dim when viewed from inside the stairwell and at the same time, become visible from outside the building.
The eighty-second edition of the Whitney Biennial—the longest-running survey of contemporary art in the United States—features work of 56 artists, duos, and collectives that reflects the current moment and examines various forms of relationality, including interspecies kinships, familial relations, geopolitical entanglements, technological affinities, shared mythologies, and infrastructural supports.
Whitney Biennial 2026 is co-organized by Whitney curators Marcela Guerrero, the DeMartini Family Curator, and Drew Sawyer, the Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography with Beatriz Cifuentes, Biennial Curatorial Assistant, and Carina Martinez, Rubio Butterfield Family Fellow.
